Project Description
Communicating the multiple factors involved in the decision making and development process of complex engineering projects is extremely difficult to do – even for industry professionals. Immersing all stakeholders – from the engineers to the general public in a 3D simulated environment allows for quick and relatively painless comprehension of the project. It even allows the professionals to see things which they didn’t “see” in their drawings. Context matters.
Genivar’s 3D simulation and cognitive geomatic department created a series of simulated videos of a major industrial project on Ile-des-Seours, Quebec. The videos were completed with the introduction of a soundtrack – voice over and music – which was synchronized with the visuals. Some motion design was added to indicate key positions, as was zooming for an up-close look at significant points of interest.
These videos were then intelligently assembled into the Flash-based interactive presentation, which included 3D simulation images, text and audio within a stand-alone platform. We designed a graphic user interface for the presentation with user control and easy access to information as the goal.
This project covered a relatively large geographical area requiring multiple videos. We placed markers on a 2D map; each represented an access link to more specifics related to that area. The user can navigate around the presentation via the markers etc. understand the implications for the environment, traffic flow and residents. Additional contextual text, graphics, illustrations, along with the videos, were connected to give an additional layer of information.
This presentation was built in Flash, thus it works as a stand-alone presentation and was also optimized for online viewing. As such it opens up the process beyond the project managers and engineers to the general public; the complexities rendered comprehensible to all.
